Other marriages:
Pearse, William Webber

In the 1881 Census for Pightley Cottage, Enmore Somerset William Pearse a clock finisher who married Ester in Spaxton Parish Church on the 7 June 1881, is shown as lodger to Esther Blackmore and her son of a few months.

William Pearse married Esther Pennock, daughter of James Pennock and Mary Colt, on 7 Jun 1881 in Spaxton Parish Church, Somerset. This was Esther's second marriage. She was born in 1837 in Rivenhall, Essex. Other names for Esther were Hester Blackmore and Ester Pennock. They had two children: Henry and John, albeit William's name does not appear on Henry's birth certificate. Given that Esther's first husband, Jesse Blackmore, had died in 1874 and William was a lodger at Esther's house around the time of Henry's birth, it has always been assumed that William was the father, Plus in the 1911 Census they mark down two living children as the product of their 31 year marriage and also Henry gives William Pearce - Mechanic as his father on his marriage certificate to Florence Harrington in 1904.

(Medical):Ascites is an irregular build up of fluid in the peritoneal cavity, most often caused by cirrhosis and cancer.

The informer on Esther's death certificate was Alice Young, her granddaughter who lived in Puriton, Somerset.

They had the following children:

F i Sarah Ann Blackmore was born 1 in 1862 in Witham, Essex. Sarah resided 2 in Apr 1871 in Spaxton, Bridgewater, Somerset. She resided 3 in Apr 1881 in The Rectory, Broomfield, Somerset. She was employed 4 as cook and domestic servant in Apr 1881 in The Rectory, Broomfield, Somerset.
M ii Jesse Blackmore was born in 1864 in Spaxton, Bridgwater, Somerset. He resided 2 in Apr 1871 in Spaxton, Bridgwater, Somerset. He resided 3 in Apr 1881 in Great Holwell, Broomfield, Somerset. He resided 4 in Apr 1911 in Sunny View, Puriton, Bridgwater, Somerset. He was employed 5 as 17-year-old indoor farmer's servant in Apr 1881 in Broomfield, Somerset. He was employed 6 as 27-year-old farm servant in Apr 1891 in Pightley Farm, Spaxton. He was employed 7 as farm labourer in Apr 1911.

The farm, at Great Holwell, Broomfield, belonged to his uncle, George Blackmore.

Mum's memories relating to one of Jesse's descendants:
'There was a fishmonger, Jesse Blackmore, in his forties, who used to deliver fish to us when we lived at the village Post Office in West Bagborough. It was on Fridays during the war years. I remember the air raid sirens sounding 'every' Friday as the family were eating their fishcakes!'
F iii Elizabeth Blackmore was born 1 in 1867 in Spaxton, Bridgwater, Somerset. Elizabeth resided in Apr 1911 in Pilgrims Cottage, West Bagborough, Somerset. She resided 2 in Apr 1891 in The Buildings, Puriton, Somerset. She was employed 3 as domestic servant at Merridge, Somerset in Apr 1881.

The 1911 West Bagborough Census describes her as a 45-year-old married visitor with one child. She was born in Spaxton so it was more than likely that she was Esther's daughter. The Census transcriber records her surname as Towney/Tormay. Although difficult to decipher, the handwriting of her step father, William, can be read as 'Young'. Further research shows that there was a marriage between Elizabeth Blackmore and William Young in 1888. Esther's death certificate shows that the informant was her grandaughter, Alice Young. Furthermore, the 1911 Census for Puriton shows Alice (aged 11yrs) to be living with her father, William and a lodger, Jesse Blackmore - Elizabeth's brother. A complication to this theory is the fact that the 1911 Censuses have two different time spans for Elizabeth's marriage. William states they have been married for 21yrs and Elizabeth's Census return states 11yrs.
M iv John Blackmore was born in 1869 in Spaxton, Bridgwater, Somerset. He died 1 in 1878 in Bridgwater Registration District, Somerset. John resided 2 in Apr 1871 in Spaxton, Bridgwater, Somerset.
F v Mary Jane Blackmore was born in 1872 in Spaxton, Bridgwater, Somerset. She died 1 in 1934 in Bristol, Gloucestershire. She resided 4 in Apr 1881 in Girls Home, Dowry Parade, Clifton, Bristol. She resided 5 on 25 Dec 1900 in 7 Dene Street, Bristol. She resided 6 in Apr 1901 in 18 Granby Hill, Bristol. She resided 7 in Apr 1911 in Police Station, Bedminster, Bristol. She resided 8 in 1920 in Bristol, Gloucestershire.

Mary is listed as the married head of house in a two-roomed flat. Husband, John, is not present. She has given her age as 26 but is in fact 29 years old.

After the death of Mary Jane, it is thought that her widowed husband then remarried. No records have yet to be found of this event but family history has it that he married Ethel May White, the daughter of Joan's next door neighbour at Bagborough.

1911 Census: Mary J (Ford) has given her age as 31 (b.1880) - not correct!

1901 Census: Mary J (Ford) has given her age as 26 (b.1875) - not correct!

1881 Census: This shows Mary J and her sister, Louisa, to be one of a number of children from round the country to be resident at a girls' home (photos of school on file).

He was counted in a census 19 in 1911 in PILGRIM BAGBOROUGH TAUNTON SOMERSET.

The 1871 Census shows William staying at 15 St James Square, Bristol along with seventeen other assistant drapers from various parts of the country. Was he on a training course; in digs; employed? Could this be the 'London University' that the family history has him being thrown out of?

William Webber Pearse, son of William Bowdige Pearse and Mary Painter Webber, was born on 12 Jun 1847 in Wellington, Somerset(1) and died Autumn 1917(2) aged 70. The family name for William was 'Clocky'. Mum's hazy memory has it that it was Clocky who went to an (unknown) London University / liked his booze / got kicked out of University - but not necessarily in that order. To date, there is no evidence for this story. [In the beginning of the 19th century the University of London was established with Colleges such as University College London (UCL), Imperial College, London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), Queen Mary College, King's College (KCL).]

Residences:
• From Apr 1851 to 1861 William lived in Fore Street, Wellington, Somerset.(3)
• In Apr 1871 William lived in 15 St James Square, St Paul, Bristol.(4)
• In Apr 1881 William lived in 1 Pightley Cottage, Enmore, Somerset.(5)
• In Apr 1891 William lived in Gib Hill Cottage, Spaxton, Somerset.(6) The 1891 Census for Spaxton shows there to have been three cottages at this address.
• In Apr 1901 William lived in West Bagborough, Somerset.(7)
• In Apr 1911 William lived in a 4-roomed house called Pilgrims Cottage in West Bagborough, Somerset.(8) Also resident were his wife, Esther, and a visiting friend called Elizabeth Young - probably Esther's married daughter. o

Occupation:
• He worked as a draper's assistant in Apr 1871.(4) The 1871 Census shows William staying at 15 St James Square, Bristol along with seventeen other assistant drapers from various parts of the country. Was he on a training course; in digs; employed? Could this be the 'London University' from which he was thrown out according to family history?
• He worked as a clock mender from 1881 to 1891 in Spaxton, Somerset.(5)
• He worked as a self-employed working clock cleaner in Apr 1901.(7)
• He worked as a postman in Apr 1911.(8)

Marriage:
7 Jun 1881, Spaxton Parish Church, Somerset.(9)

William married Esther Pennock, daughter of James Pennock and Mary Colt, on 7 Jun 1881 in Spaxton Parish Church, Somerset.(9) This was Esther's second marriage.

At the outbreak of the war, John was unable to enlist because he had a curvature of the spine. He became Bagborough's sub-postmaster in 1907 through to his retirement in 1950. Being an auxillary postman and sub-postmaster meant that he didn't get a pention. However, the Post Office did give him a gratuity on his retirement. The 1910 edition of the Somerset Kelly's Directory shows John to be the village postmaster. The 1927 edition states that he was both sub-postmaster and schoolmaster. Other commitments were:

General Notes:
John's dog in the 40s and 50s was called Paddy. Prior to Paddy he had Jock.

Joan has John's prayer book containing an entry in what has always been thought to be his handwriting. The writer has made reference to his 'mum', Ann Blackmore, although there is no Ann Blackmore. Could this have been a present from John's mother and father (Esther and William) to Esther's step-mother, Sarah Blackmore whose family nickname was Ann? This is one conundrum that will, probably, never be resolved.
