Canadian cheddar was 8d a pound( 2.2 kilograms). A labourer earnt around 70 pounds a year sterling at the turn of the 20th Century. (there were 240 old pence "d" to the pound sterling)

Because I Live in the Canary Islands just off North Africa popping to my local family history centre is not really an option, so I have used the internet extensively in my research. I do have a subscription to Ancestry.co.uk and to Genes Reunited, but I have also found a number of excellent free resources and have put information and links to them above.
