"Ellis Farm Notes “Jeffery Child of London” yeoman, by his will dated 4th August 1620 devised £100 to be bestowed upon lands by his executors, towards the relief of poor peoples, inhabitants within the hamlet of North End. It appears from the recital of a deed, dated 23rd November 1625, in possession of the trustees, that the above sum was invested in the purchase of a messuage called Ellis's, at six acres of land in the parish of High Easter. The premises have been regularly conveyed to succeeding trustees by deed dated 20th March 1672, 2nd & 3rd October 1699, 13th & 14th April 1725, 9th & 10th October 1775, 23rd & 24th June 1808 all in the possession of the present trustees. The last conveyance is by lease and release dated 13th & 14th February 1835, whereby Joseph Townsend and John Snow surviving trustees, conveyed the same to Charles Skill, James Skill, James Stock, William Snow, Thomas Dowsett, Thomas Davey, Daniel Hockley, William Perry and William Coe, and their heirs on and above trusts. The property consists of a cottage and a barn with about 5acres of arable land, in the parish of High Easter, in the occupation of Isaac Lodge, as tenant from year to year, at a rent of £10 a year. This is thought a high rent considering the present price of agricultural produce. The trustees repair and insure the premises. The rent has been regularly paid. The Trustee of Black Chapel receives the rent. They usually apply it in gifts varying from 5/- to 1/- to sundry poor inhabitants of the hamlet of North End. Last year the trustees out of this fund gave a bonnet to each of the girls of the Sunday School. The accounts are audited once a year and the book signed by the trustees. The last audit was at Christmas 1834. This was the Report of the Commissioner to enquire concerning Charities 1819 - 1837 so far as Ellis was concerned. In 1625 the property was in occupation of Henry Newell and by 1672 his son Joseph Newell was the tenant. While Joseph was living there in 1671, the house suffered a lot of damage in a gale, as the account book records - “Lady Day 1671 about this time, it was so that in a great wind the KECHING (kitchen) fell downe, the building up of which with other expenses about that time happ ning” the account goes on to relate that the cost of the rebuilding exceeded the rent for 2 years on the property leaving nothing to distribute to the poor. In 1829 there was a fire on the premises as an entry records, “Received of the Royal Exchange Assurance Fire Office the sum of ninety pounds on account damage done by fire at premises belonging the poor of North end at High Easter”. In 1809 a Mr Reynolds was the tenant at a rent of £7.00, but by 1811 when Edward Mead moved in the rent was £10.00. Mead farmed it until 1827 when Mr Chalk took it for three years. In 1853 Isaac Lodge moved in and so began a family association which was to last for well over 100 years. Isaac had a daughter Keziah (“Kessy”) who married one Charles Lodge and their son followed his grandfather into the property. David lived to be 90 and died in 1948. His son George took over from his father. George ran in conjunction with his farming a small business selling corn and meal, supplies of which he weekly sold round the district. George also employed a man Hugh Redman and these two are both remembered for their remarkable skill of cutting with a scythe. In the hay season they would often cut miles of the roadside verges and cart and stash the resulting hay. When George died in 1954 rather tragically, for he was found drowned in a shallow ditch, into which it was thought he had fallen after suffering a giddy turn. Hugh Redman took over the tenancy of the property with his son John. They farmed the land but let the house, the first tenants being Mr & Mrs Reg Simons. Reg had formally been foreman at Poplar Farm for Mr Walter Matthews. After the Simons left, Mr & Mrs Harry Reeve followed. Mrs Reeve was one of Hugh Redman's daughters. After a year or two when the Reeves moved, Mr & Mrs Bob Redman moved in. Bob was the youngest son of Hugh Redman and he had married Joan walker, a daughter of Mr & Mrs Fred Walker of the Council Smallholding “Swallows”. Later Fred Walker farmed the land that went with Ellis's. When the lease to the Redman's ran out, the property was offered for sale by the trustees at public auction by John Welch & Son at Great Dunmow, on January 27th 1970. The description of the cottage was of timber and lath and plaster construction with thatched roof. The accommodation and approximate sizes of the rooms comprising: On Ground Floor, Entrance Lobby: living Rooms 15ft 9in x 9ins, brick built fireplace (old open fireplace at rear) beamed ceiling, 2 wall lights, 13amp power point. Reception Room or Bedroom 11ft 6ins x 10ft 3ins 13amp point and 2amp power points; Kitchen 15ft 6ins x 10ft 6ins, double sink unit (main water over) Rayburn Cooker, electrical cooker control, cupboard, 3 x 13amp power points. Main electric and Water Connection, Farm Buildings of timber weather board and corrugated iron, comprising; store Shed, Small Barn with Lean to Store Shed at rear and Lean to Loose Box with open Shed and yard; two enclosures of Arable Land in all 6 acres. Schedule O.S No 9962 Cottage and Buildings 0.42 acre 9065 Arable 2.44 acre 8658 Arable 3.17 acre Total 6.03 acres Rateable Value £25. Tithe Redemption Annuity £1-10-6d. The buyer at £5,700 was Mr Harrison. He kept the property several years and did quite a lot of restoration to the cottage (he added the present North Wing). Eventually he sold to Mr & Mrs Butterworth, who lived there several years with their family until 1978, when business commitments took them to France and they put the property on the market again for £56,000. When Mr & Mrs dick Brown brought it, they in their turn added to the building, with a new kitchen at the rear and a porch at the front. The also restored the 17th Century Barn. The Browns also were responsible for the delightful garden which is now a feature of the premises. In 1988 the Browns put the property on the market again at an asking price of £345,000 or near offer. It was brought by the present owners. The water supply before mains water was from a pump in the yard. © Derek Bircher High Easter Historian."

John Harrington, eldest son of William Harrington and Hannah was baptised 21 November 1841 at High Easter, Essex.
